About Mayham Lake

Mayham Lake is a small, suburban pond within the Elaine T. Valente Open Space in Adams County, sitting right beside the South Platte River near Thornton. It draws a steady mix of families, dog walkers, anglers, and cyclists who appreciate having a pocket of nature surrounded by neighborhood convenience. Multiple reviewers mention bringing kids here for their first fishing experience, making it one of the more beginner-friendly spots along the Front Range.

Fishing at Mayham Lake has mixed reports. Some visitors catch fish during early mornings and late afternoons, particularly at the back lake along the gravel path. Others report slow action, and at least one reviewer noted a park ranger saying the lake had not been restocked after a die-off. Anglers should check current Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocking schedules and local regulations before planning a trip specifically for fishing. Nightcrawlers are mentioned but without consistent success.

The open space connects directly to the South Platte Trail, which makes it a natural stop for cyclists and long-distance walkers. Paved paths accommodate both bikes and pedestrians, though several reviewers caution that cyclists, especially those on electric bikes, ride fast and pass without warning. Pedestrians sometimes feel crowded to single file on busy weekends. Dirt trails branch off the paved route for a quieter walking experience.

Dog walking is one of the most popular activities here, with families and solo walkers both praising the trail variety. Dogs are required to be on leash, though enforcement is uneven and some visitors report unleashed dogs. Bird watching along the river corridor is another draw, with reviewers noting it as a reliable spot for casual birding. Picnic areas are used frequently by families, and restrooms are available on site. Parking is convenient with ample lot space. The main drawback is occasional trash left by transient campers near the river, though the area is generally clean during daytime visits.

If you're looking to fish here don't bother. Park ranger said they all died out and won't stock it.

I went fishing here for about 3 1/2 hours this morning. I didn't catch anything. Didn't even get one bite. I was using nightcrawlers.

Love all the options for trails for dog walking. However the cyclists using the paved paths are incredibly rude and inconsiderate of pedestrians (who are supposed to have the right of way). They come flying up behind you without warning, especially the motorized bikes. You are risking your life walking there, especially on the weekends. Pedestrians have to walk single file because of the cyclists. It's too bad they have to ruin this great place. Motorized bikes should not be allowed. Regular bikes are bad enough. My experience with the cyclists is the the ONLY reason for the 3 star rating.

Nice place to walk our dogs. Not to far from home. Plus, we can do some birding.

Another fantastic example of the public Park and trail system that Denver has to offer! I see a lot of bicyclists and Walkers around here but I mainly go to pan for gold. No gold here. Don't come here to pan for gold for sure. πŸ˜‰

Elaine T Valente Open Space is has more than one pond. It is beside the South Platte river. For those who like to fish. Check local laws. Biking - this is connected to South Platte trail. Or even walk through the dirt trails.
