About Prewitt Reservoir

Prewitt Reservoir is a free-access State Wildlife Area in Washington County on Colorado's eastern plains, roughly two hours northeast of Denver near the town of Brush. This shallow prairie reservoir offers free dispersed camping, sandy beaches, warm water swimming, and productive fishing for catfish and other warm-water species. The reservoir sits within the larger Prewitt State Wildlife Area, surrounded by enormous cottonwood trees that provide welcome shade against the open plains sun. Visitors can park and camp anywhere along the shoreline without designated sites, creating a flexible old-school camping experience.

Fishing at Prewitt Reservoir produces catfish in the canal and outlet areas, with the best action in early summer before water levels drop. The outlet near the pumphouse tends to fish well when water is being released. Water levels decline significantly after midsummer, reducing fishable area and occasionally causing fish kills in late season. After August 1, fishing access is restricted to the dam area during duck hunting season, so plan warm-season fishing trips for June and July. A valid Colorado fishing license and either a small game hunting license, habitat stamp, or Prewitt/Jumbo season pass from Colorado Parks and Wildlife is required for entry.

Swimming is unrestricted at Prewitt Reservoir, with shallow water extending far from shore, making it a safe choice for families with children. The sandy beach areas provide easy water access, though visitors should scan for broken glass and debris buried in the sand before walking barefoot. The water stays warmer than most Colorado lakes due to the shallow depth and plains elevation, so swimming is comfortable through much of summer without the cold shock common at mountain reservoirs.

Kayaking and boating are both permitted, with a boat ramp available for launching. The open water and gentle waves make for relaxed paddling sessions. Birding is a notable activity here, with flocks of white pelicans reported as a spectacular sight along with other large waterfowl nesting at the reservoir. The cottonwood groves and prairie habitat attract diverse bird species throughout the season.

Camping is primitive and free, with no designated sites, no hookups, and no running water. Three upgraded portable restrooms are scattered around the reservoir, generally stocked with toilet paper but without running water. Bring your own drinking water, toilet paper as backup, firewood, and a rake for clearing campsite debris. Wind is a constant factor on the plains, often strong enough to require extra tarps for wind blocks and secure tent staking. Fire bans are less common here than at mountain locations, so campfires are often permitted. The reservoir fills up quickly on summer weekends, so weekday visits offer more solitude. Rangers patrol to check fishing licenses and wildlife stamps. Raccoons are active at night, and fire ants have been reported in some areas, so keep food secured and watch where you set up camp. Night sky viewing is excellent with clear, star-filled skies away from city light pollution.

Great spot to take kids swimming, and ideal fishing in early summer. Sandy beach areas, overnight camping spots, plenty of parking, and port a pottys located in two different spots.

Very nice reservoir to camp and fish. Came with family and we all had a wonderful time. Lots of catfish in the canel. We enjoyed kayaking on the reservoir and relaxing on the beach. The water was only about shin deep pretty far out which for me, was nice. There’s a few outhouses but it’s very primitive which I also don’t mind. The rangers were friendly and helpful and everyone we encountered was kind as well. I would absolutely come back to here.

4/5 – Peaceful Spot for Fishing & Family Time Prewitt Reservoir is such a beautiful and peaceful place—perfect for a relaxing day with your loved ones or even just some solo time to unwind. The view of the lake is gorgeous, and there are plenty of trees around that offer shade and a great spot to set up for the day right in front of the water. I personally loved it for fishing 🎣—it’s quiet, calm, and the kind of place where you can really enjoy the moment. The water isn’t cold, which made it even better for the kids—they had a blast! The only downside for me was the camping area. It’s not my favorite spot to set up for the night, so I’d recommend coming prepared if you plan to stay longer. Still, it didn’t take away from the overall experience. We’ll definitely be going back. If you’re planning a visit, bring what you need for a comfy day, maybe pack a picnic, and enjoy the natural beauty. It’s a great little getaway without going too far.

Love this place so much... The bathrooms are usually ok for being at a lake usually have toilet paper but not always. One time I left in the middle of the night tho because people were walking around our campsite and shinning flash lights towards are tent... I left my tent and everything and I never went back until months later then if course it was gone, but I have left stuff there all day an get back that night an everything still there.
