About Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake in San Juan County rests along the Million Dollar Highway corridor between Silverton and Red Mountain Pass, placing it among the most accessible alpine lakes in Colorado's San Juan Mountains. Visitors can pull right off the paved highway and park steps from the water, no unpaved roads or high-clearance vehicles required. The lake's crystal-clear water and surrounding Red Mountain peaks make it a magnet for photographers and day-trippers traveling this iconic scenic route.

Fall color season is the headliner at Crystal Lake. Aspen groves encircling the water turn vivid gold and orange, set against the distinctive rust-red mountainsides that give the Red Mountains their name. Reviewers describe it as one of the most photogenic stops along the entire Million Dollar Highway, with sunrise and sunset visits yielding particularly dramatic images. Even outside peak foliage, the alpine scenery draws visitors year-round.

The historic Otto Mears Road trail begins near the lake and follows the western ridgeline for roughly two miles out and back to the old Larsen Mine area. This trail is notably flat and manageable for visitors of all fitness levels, making it a dependable option for families and out-of-state guests who want San Juan Mountain views without a demanding climb. Additional trails in the area extend the hiking options for those wanting a longer outing.

Fishing at Crystal Lake is a casual affair. The water is exceptionally clear and cold, and visitors report trying their luck with lines in the water. It is better characterized as a scenic fishing stop than a dedicated angling destination. The lake's small size and roadside location mean it sees steady visitor traffic, though it rarely feels packed and maintains a peaceful atmosphere.

Crystal Lake functions best as a scenic pullover, picnic destination, or gateway to a short hike rather than a full-day recreation area. Its proximity to Silverton makes it a convenient stop for travelers already exploring the area. Dog walkers, picnickers, and anyone looking to stretch their legs during the drive between Silverton and Ouray will find it an ideal break point with genuinely striking mountain scenery.

Easy to access, just right next to the road, no need to drive unpaved road. Sedan friendly 😂

The City of Crystal Lake can trace its origin story back to two separate communities, established in the 1800's, called “Nunda” and “Crystal Lake”.

This is an awesome place to visit. You can get distant views. And, there is the old Otto Mears Road trail that parallels the west side ridges. This is a great place to bring our out of state visitors as the walk on that Otto Mears trail is very flat. It is about 2 ish miles, out and back, to the Larsen Mine area.
