About Upper Dome Reservoir

Upper Dome Reservoir lies in a broad, open valley in Saguache County, part of a cluster of small impoundments in the remote San Luis Valley region of south-central Colorado. Set against a backdrop of high peaks and rolling ranchland, this reservoir offers a quiet fishing destination that draws a loyal group of return visitors year after year. If you are looking for solitude and reliable trout water without crowds, Upper Dome Reservoir delivers on both counts.

Fishing is the sole reason most people make the trip to Upper Dome Reservoir. Trout are the primary target species, and visitors who have fished here across multiple seasons report consistently good catches. Bank fishing is straightforward given the open shoreline, and the reservoir's manageable size means you can cover productive water without a boat. That said, anglers should be aware that sucker fish are also present in notable numbers, which can be a nuisance when you are targeting trout. In recent years, some visitors have reported fish die-offs with dead fish visible in the water and along the banks, and trout size has been smaller than in previous seasons. Checking current conditions with Colorado Parks and Wildlife before your trip is a worthwhile step.

Facilities at Upper Dome Reservoir are minimal but functional. An outhouse is located on the east side of the reservoir, south of the middle dam, and a water pump provides potable water in the same area. Beyond that, there is no developed infrastructure, so bring everything you need for the day. The open landscape and lack of tree cover mean wind exposure is common, and sun protection is essential during summer visits.

The surrounding area is peaceful and visually striking, with wide views across the San Luis Valley toward the Sangre de Cristo and La Garita ranges. Bird watching is productive in the wetland and grassland habitat around the reservoir, and the drive in provides a scenic tour of one of Colorado's least-visited valleys. Upper Dome Reservoir is best suited for anglers and nature enthusiasts who value quiet over amenities and do not mind the trade-off of a remote location for the reward of genuine solitude on the water.

Been here several times over the years. This year the health of the reservoir is not good. Lots of dead fish in the water and along the banks. We did catch and little trout but didn't catch anything of the size we have in the past
