About Beaver Creek Reservoir

Beaver Creek Reservoir is a well-stocked fishing destination in Rio Grande County near the town of South Fork, Colorado, nestled in the foothills of the San Juan Mountains. This reservoir draws a steady stream of anglers, families, and outdoor enthusiasts who appreciate its easy access, consistent trout fishing, and panoramic mountain scenery that visitors describe as beautiful in all four seasons. The combination of reliable fish stocking, proximity to town, and a setting that feels more remote than it actually is makes Beaver Creek Reservoir one of the more popular fishing spots in the San Luis Valley region.

Fishing is the primary activity at Beaver Creek Reservoir, and reviewers report outstanding success rates. The reservoir is regularly stocked with rainbow trout, and multiple visitors describe catching their limit within an hour or two using powerbait or worms. Fly fishing is also productive, with reviewers noting active fish and consistent bites. Families with children find this lake especially rewarding because the stocking schedule keeps fish populations high and bites frequent, making it an ideal spot for introducing kids to trout fishing. The reservoir can get busy on weekends, so arriving early helps secure a good shoreline position.

Ice fishing extends the season through winter, and reviewers confirm productive outings on the frozen reservoir. Snowmobiling in the surrounding area adds a winter recreation option for visitors who want to combine ice fishing with motorized snow sports. The reservoir is described as pretty in all four seasons, with fall colors, winter ice, spring runoff, and summer sunshine each offering a distinct experience.

Kayaking and boating are available on Beaver Creek Reservoir, though access points are limited. The primary boat launch area is near the dam, but the terrain there is steep with loose rocks, making the descent challenging. The far end of the reservoir near the inlet offers easier shoreline access for fishing and launching small watercraft. Visitors should be aware that a portion of the reservoir shoreline is owned by the American Legion, and access restrictions apply to certain areas. Kayakers and boaters should stay on the public-access side to avoid conflicts.

Camping near Beaver Creek Reservoir includes a free campsite located near the dam, and the area also connects to dispersed camping opportunities along surrounding forest roads. Clean restrooms are available on-site. Hiking trails in the vicinity are reported to offer good mountain views, though the walking areas immediately around the reservoir are limited. The four-wheel-drive roads leading to and around the reservoir provide an off-road exploration option for visitors with capable vehicles.

The reservoir sits close enough to South Fork for convenient resupply runs, making it practical for multi-day fishing trips. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, and during dry periods the reservoir can drop significantly, reducing both fishable area and shoreline access. Wind is common and can make casting difficult. Weekend crowding is the most frequent complaint, so weekday visits offer a quieter experience. Visitors should fish legally and safely, respecting both regulations and fellow anglers sharing the shoreline. The combination of consistent stocking, easy access from South Fork, and San Juan Mountain scenery makes Beaver Creek Reservoir a dependable choice for trout fishing in southern Colorado.

Still haven’t caught anything in this lake and was really windy but it’s a nice place to visit and worth the game of cat and mouse with those buggers.

Great place to boat, kayak, and fish. They stock it regularly as this is one of the more popular places to fish in this area. Year 'round you can find people boating, fishing, ice fishing, tubing or snowmobiling at this reservoir. The far end is which is closer to the inlet is more easily accessible and the close end which is closer to the dam is pretty difficult to get down to as it is steep and has many loose rocks. Catching your limit is rarely an issue here.
