About Crystal Lake

Crystal Lake in Ouray County sits right alongside the Million Dollar Highway (US 550) between Ouray and Silverton, making it one of the most accessible alpine lakes in the San Juan Mountains. You can pull off the road, park your sedan, and be standing at the water's edge in under a minute. Reviewers consistently rate it among the most photogenic stops on this legendary scenic drive, with crystal-clear water reflecting the surrounding Red Mountains.

The lake serves as a popular stop for photographers, especially during fall when the surrounding aspen groves turn gold and orange against the rust-red peaks. Sunrise and sunset visits draw photographers who take advantage of the mountain light and the lake's mirror-like surface. The fall color season is particularly celebrated here, with multiple visitors describing it as one of the best foliage viewpoints along the highway.

Hiking near Crystal Lake includes the historic Otto Mears Road trail, which parallels the ridgeline on the west side of the lake. This trail is notably flat and accessible, running approximately two miles out and back to the Larsen Mine area. The easy grade makes it a reliable option for visitors of varying fitness levels and a good choice for bringing out-of-state guests who want mountain scenery without a strenuous climb.

Fishing at Crystal Lake is possible, with visitors noting the exceptionally clear water. The lake is small but holds fish, and anglers describe it as a casual spot to try your luck rather than a dedicated fishing destination. The water is reported as very cold, consistent with its high-altitude alpine setting.

Crystal Lake works best as a scenic stop, picnic spot, or short hiking destination rather than a full-day outing. Its location directly on the paved Million Dollar Highway means no unpaved roads or high-clearance vehicles are needed. Visitors use it to stretch their legs during the drive, walk dogs, enjoy a quiet picnic with mountain views, and capture photographs of one of Colorado's most dramatic alpine landscapes. The lake sees moderate traffic but rarely feels overcrowded, and weekday visits offer genuine tranquility.

Easy to access, just right next to the road, no need to drive unpaved road. Sedan friendly 😂

The City of Crystal Lake can trace its origin story back to two separate communities, established in the 1800's, called “Nunda” and “Crystal Lake”.

This is an awesome place to visit. You can get distant views. And, there is the old Otto Mears Road trail that parallels the west side ridges. This is a great place to bring our out of state visitors as the walk on that Otto Mears trail is very flat. It is about 2 ish miles, out and back, to the Larsen Mine area.
