About North Lake

North Lake is a hidden gem tucked into Las Animas County in southern Colorado, drawing anglers and nature lovers who prefer solitude over crowds. With crystal-clear water, a strict artificial-flies-and-lures-only regulation, and a no-gas-motors rule, this lake rewards visitors who appreciate a quieter, more pristine mountain fishing experience.

Fly fishing is the star attraction at North Lake. The lake holds trout of multiple species and sizes, and reviewers describe consistently productive outings from shore and from the dam. One visitor recounted paddling a canoe at night with underwater lights, revealing hundreds of trout beneath the surface. The artificial-only bait restriction keeps the fishing quality high and the atmosphere peaceful. Anglers report casting dry flies and Pistol Petes from the dam with good results, though some note the fishing can be challenging at times, which adds to the appeal for experienced fly fishers.

Kayaking and canoeing work well here thanks to the calm, clear water and the ban on gas-powered motors. The lake is small enough to paddle thoroughly in a session, and the mountain panorama from the water is spectacular. Visitors describe the views of the surrounding peaks as some of the best in southern Colorado.

The setting is remarkably peaceful. Even on Memorial Day weekend, reviewers found the lake uncrowded, making it a reliable option when other destinations are packed. The road runs right along the shoreline, providing easy access without a long hike in. Restrooms are available on-site. The water is cold, even in July, so swimmers and waders should prepare accordingly.

North Lake sits at elevation and can freeze over by March, so winter visitors should expect ice rather than open water. The drive to the lake is scenic, and the area around the lake offers sweeping panoramic views of the mountains. Several reviewers describe North Lake as one of their all-time favorite places in Colorado, a spot that keeps drawing them back season after season.

Beautiful lake. Very clean, bathrooms provided, cold water in July. Sunny, breezy but cool. Love this place! Good spot for fishing, kayak, etc.
