About Flagler Reservoir

Flagler Reservoir is a State Wildlife Area in Kit Carson County on the eastern plains of Colorado, located just off Interstate 70 near the town of Flagler. The reservoir has been dry for years, with no water present despite its designation. What remains is an open grassland basin that functions primarily as a free camping spot and birding destination for travelers passing through on I-70. Visitors should arrive with clear expectations: there is no lake to fish, swim, or boat on, but the site still has value for specific purposes.

The wildlife area offers free dispersed camping with large pads that accommodate vehicles of any size, including Class C RVs and large campers. Some sites on the east side have shade canopies. The area is quiet and safe, with minimal noise from the interstate. Pit toilets are available on the east side, though they are basic and lack seat rims. There is no potable water, no hookups, and no developed facilities beyond the restrooms and gravel loop road. A Colorado parks pass may be required for entry, with day passes available for around nine dollars.

Birding is the standout activity at Flagler Reservoir. Visitors have spotted White-faced Ibis, large flocks of Yellow-headed Blackbirds, and other grassland species. Coyotes are frequently heard at night, and deer appear at dusk. The open landscape produces vivid sunsets that campers enjoy. Dogs are welcome and reportedly enjoy the open space.

Bugs are a significant issue at Flagler Reservoir, particularly mosquitoes and flies during spring and summer months. Some visitors report unbearable fly swarms, while others pass through without bites. The wind can pick up considerably, which is worth noting for tent campers. The site works best as an overnight stop for road travelers rather than a destination in its own right. A diner near the interstate exit provides a convenient meal option when leaving. The dry reservoir is a disappointment for anyone expecting water-based recreation, and multiple reviewers express frustration that the water supply has not been restored.

There is no water here so you will not be catching any fish. However, there are lots of coyotes which are fun to listen to at night. Awesome spot to stop by while traveling… I imagine that this place would be infested with mosquitoes in the spring/summer.

I’ll give it 5 stars because this placed served its purpose for our needs - finding some new birds. Saw White-faced Ibis and a couple hundred Yellow-headed Blackbirds. Looked like a great place for a picnic with nice views.

Great place for a stop. The dogs had a great time too. Beautiful sunset to end the day. Quiet, clean and safe. I wish I knew more about the reservoir.

A good quiet place to camp. That's about it. But it's pretty and no one will bother you.
