About Walden Reservoir

Walden Reservoir sits in the wide-open expanse of North Park in Jackson County, Colorado, surrounded by sweeping grasslands and distant mountain ranges. Known locally as a premier birding destination, this high-altitude reservoir draws wildlife enthusiasts from across the state who come to observe white pelicans, waterfowl, shorebirds, and raptors in their natural habitat. If you are searching for a quiet, off-the-beaten-path spot to reconnect with Colorado's wild side, Walden Reservoir delivers an experience that feels far removed from the crowded Front Range.

Bird watching is the standout activity at Walden Reservoir. Visitors regularly report sightings of large flocks of American white pelicans, along with ducks, geese, herons, and other wildfowl that use the reservoir as a stopover during migration. Spring and early summer bring the most diverse species activity, making it an ideal season for birders armed with binoculars and spotting scopes. The surrounding wetlands also come alive with chorus frogs, adding a distinctive soundtrack to any visit.

Duck hunting is another popular draw, particularly during the fall waterfowl season. Opening day tends to be busy, so arriving early and scouting locations in advance is worthwhile. An important detail for hunters: while much of the land surrounding the reservoir is public, not all of it is open to access. Checking land ownership maps from Colorado Parks and Wildlife before heading out prevents trespassing issues and wasted time.

Fishing is not currently available at Walden Reservoir, so anglers should plan to visit nearby waters such as Delaney Buttes Lakes or Lake John, both within a short drive in North Park. Visitors exploring State Forest State Park, located east of Walden, often combine a reservoir stop with their park itinerary.

Summer visitors should prepare for mosquitoes and biting flies, which can be intense near the water, especially during June and July. Bug spray and long sleeves are strongly recommended. The reservoir area offers open, undeveloped shoreline with limited facilities, so bring your own water, snacks, and sun protection. Walden Reservoir rewards those who appreciate raw, unmanicured landscapes and the chance to observe Colorado wildlife in a setting that most tourists never discover.

Lot of birds, nature. Beautiful place to visit. While visiting the state forest state park, you can plan for Walden trip as well.

No fishing, but good duck hunting. Usually very busy opening day and day after. Note- while most of the lake is public land, NOT all! Check maps carefully before hunting
