About Rainbow Lake

Rainbow Lake rests in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness on the western edge of Jackson County, roughly 20 miles west of Walden in Colorado's North Park region. The lake is accessed via Rainbow Lake Trail #1130, a steady-climb hike of approximately 5 miles one way that transitions through aspen groves, lodgepole pine forest, boulder fields, and finally opens into an alpine basin. Reviewers describe the shifting terrain as one of the trail's defining features: sandy paths through aspens give way to rocky scrambles before softening again under thick forest canopy. The trailhead sits at the end of County Road 22A with parking for 10 to 12 vehicles and no restrooms or water.

Fishing is a primary draw at Rainbow Lake. The lake supports brook trout and rainbow trout, and anglers report consistent catches from the shoreline. Fly fishing and spin-casting both produce results, with late summer and early fall providing the most reliable conditions. The surrounding Mount Zirkel Wilderness lakes, including nearby Slide Lake, expand the fishing options for backpackers willing to push further along the trail network.

The trail runs best from June through October or November, depending on snowfall. Early-season visitors should expect snow covering portions of the upper trail, potentially making the final approach to the lake impassable until July in heavy snow years. One reviewer noted May conditions with too much snow to reach the lake. Summer hikers should bring bug spray and start early, as the lower sections offer limited tree cover and exposure to afternoon sun. Afternoon thunderstorms are typical in summer, so plan to be off exposed ridgelines by early afternoon.

Backpackers use Rainbow Lake as a base for exploring the broader trail system that connects to the Wyoming Trail and the Continental Divide Trail. Dispersed camping is available in the wilderness, though standard Leave No Trace regulations apply. The trail follows a well-marked route, but reviewers warn about one junction where the path splits. Stay on trail #1130 as marked at the trailhead to avoid taking a wrong turn. The area is remote with no cell service, and the closest town for supplies is Walden. This hike rewards those willing to put in the miles with alpine scenery, quality trout fishing, and genuine solitude away from the Front Range crowds.

Moderate hike going in - mostly all steady incline. Very interesting shift from sandy/trail amongst the aspens, to rocky boulder terrain, to softer soil in the forest again. The lakes are awesome once you get there- but it’ll take you a while! I definitely will go again Make sure you follow route 1130 - as it’s marked at the trailhead- there’s one place the path splits and you want to know that.

Beautiful sites during the hike. Was here in May and there was snow covering a lot of the trail so couldn’t make it to the lake. Would recommend in the warmer months

Great trailhead and hiking spot. Hiked with little ones and didn’t make it to the lakes, but would recommend arriving early in the morning as there is limited tree coverage from the sun.

Nothing worst than going there to enjoy a day around the lake and the first thing you get is herrased by the neighbor a couple houses down the road on the left. Came flying up on his four wheeler and started going off on someone. That place needs a trail camera 📸 to catch him in the act.

Trailhead and trail are closed due to the Middle Fork fire. Please all stay away.

Best June to October or November, but can maybe stretch that a month or so either direction. Steady incline the whole way, but BEAUTIFUL views the whole way and especially at the lakes. Bring bug spray!
