About North Delaney Lake

North Delaney Lake sits on the high plains of Jackson County about 12 miles west of Walden, and if you have ever dreamed of catching trophy trout in a quiet mountain setting, this 160-acre reservoir delivers. Part of the Delaney Butte Lakes State Wildlife Area, North Delaney holds Gold Medal status from Colorado Parks and Wildlife, placing it among only a handful of lakes in the state that consistently produce large, healthy trout. The lake draws anglers from Fort Collins, Denver, and well beyond who make the drive into North Park for brown trout, rainbow trout, Snake River cutthroat, and brook trout.

Fishing pressure stays manageable because of the remote location and wakeless-boating-only regulation, so you can work the shoreline or float a belly boat without competing for space. Fall is the prime window for big brown trout, but spring ice-off and the summer hopper season both produce memorable days on the water. Ice fishing picks up in December and runs through March, with consistent catches of quality trout reported by locals who set up on the north end of the lake. A popular ice fishing derby held here each winter underscores how productive the fishery remains even under a frozen surface.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocks North Delaney Lake with brown, cutthroat, and rainbow trout and enforces special regulations to protect the fishery. Brown trout between 14 and 20 inches must be returned to the water immediately, and rainbow or cutthroat trout between 18 and 22 inches carry the same slot-limit restriction. The bag limit is two trout per angler per day. From September 15 through November 15, fishing from the dam or within 100 feet of it is prohibited.

Camping at North Delaney is free and primitive. You can pitch a tent along the shoreline anywhere within the SWA boundary at no additional charge, though you will find no hookups, running water, or developed pads. Vault toilets and picnic tables are placed at intervals around the lake. A valid Colorado hunting, fishing, or State Wildlife Area pass is required for all visitors 18 and older, even if you are only sightseeing. Cell service is limited to nonexistent, so plan your trip accordingly and pack everything you need.

The surrounding landscape of North Park offers sweeping views east toward Cameron Pass and west toward Rabbit Ears Pass. Bear sightings are common in the area, so store food securely and keep a clean camp. Mosquitoes can be fierce in July and August, so bring repellent. Despite the minimal amenities, North Delaney Lake rewards visitors who value solitude, big fish, and some of the most striking high-country scenery in Colorado.

Well, I really don't want to say anything about this lake, since Colorado has been getting so overcrowded with people, and REALLY don't want that to happen to this lake...but WOW! What a beautiful lake!!!! Also, Kudos to the Park Ranger!!!

Some awesome fish, if you can find them. Pretty finnekie during an Ice fishing derby. Fantastic views east into Cameron pass and west into Rabbit ears pass. It's real hard to beat north park for the beauty and fishing.
