About Meadow Creek Reservoir

Meadow Creek Reservoir is a productive fishing destination in Jackson County, located about four miles past the small community of Gould along Highway 14 in the North Park region of Colorado. The reservoir sits in a broad mountain valley surrounded by sagebrush meadows and distant peaks, offering a remote and peaceful setting for anglers who want to target large rainbow trout without the crowds found at more accessible front range waters. The reservoir is known for holding big fish, and experienced visitors describe catching rainbows that rank among the largest in the North Park area.

Fishing at Meadow Creek Reservoir is the main event, and it draws both summer and winter anglers. During open water season, shore fishing and small watercraft provide access to the reservoir. Rainbow trout are the primary species, and they grow to impressive sizes in these cold, nutrient-rich waters. Only a portion of the reservoir shoreline is open to public fishing access, so pay attention to posted boundaries and respect private land adjacent to the water. Fly fishing, lure fishing, and bait fishing are all used here, and the relatively low pressure means fish can be willing to bite when conditions are right.

Ice fishing at Meadow Creek Reservoir is a legitimate winter adventure. Jackson County winters bring heavy snow and sustained cold, which builds thick, reliable ice on the reservoir. Anglers have reported catching over 50 fish in a single ice fishing outing, including several nice trout. Getting to the reservoir in winter can involve driving through blizzard conditions on Highway 14, so four-wheel drive, snow tires, and winter survival gear are not optional. The remoteness adds to the experience, and on a clear winter day the snow-covered valley is as scenic as the fishing is productive.

The area around Meadow Creek Reservoir offers beautiful scenery year-round. The valley views are wide open, with mountain ridges framing the horizon in every direction. Wildlife is abundant in the North Park region, including moose, elk, mule deer, and a variety of birds. The reservoir itself makes for excellent photography, especially during golden hour when the water reflects the surrounding peaks.

Facilities at Meadow Creek Reservoir are minimal. There is no developed campground, no restrooms, and no boat ramp at the reservoir itself. Visitors should bring everything they need and pack out all trash. The nearest services are in Walden, the Jackson County seat, about 20 miles south on Highway 14. Lake John, another well-known North Park fishery, is nearby and offers an alternative if Meadow Creek conditions are not cooperating. Cell service is limited in this remote corner of Colorado, so come prepared with supplies, a full tank of gas, and a plan that does not depend on connectivity.
