About Willow Creek Reservoir

Willow Creek Reservoir in Grand County is a quieter alternative to nearby Lake Granby and Grand Lake, offering excellent fishing, paddling, and camping without the heavy crowds. Located just off the main highway near the town of Granby, this no-motorboat reservoir draws anglers chasing rainbow trout, paddleboarders, kayakers, and families looking for a more relaxed mountain lake experience.

Fishing is the main draw at Willow Creek Reservoir, and reviewers rave about the catch rates. Multiple visitors report catching 30 or more fish in a single day, with rainbow trout being the primary species. Shore fishing is productive, and the reservoir is shallow enough to be considered easy and kid-friendly. Early mornings tend to be quieter for anglers, as paddleboarders and kayakers arrive later in the day. Some reviewers note tension between shore anglers and paddlers over noise and proximity, so arriving early gives you the best fishing experience.

No motorized boats of any kind are allowed on Willow Creek Reservoir, making it ideal for kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and other self-propelled watercraft. The water runs warmer than many nearby mountain lakes, and several reviewers confirm swimming is possible, though most shoreline access points are limited. You can see mountain views from certain spots on the water, adding to the scenic appeal.

Camping is available near the reservoir with bear boxes provided at campsites for food storage. The campground sits back from the main highway, making it less crowded and easier to find a spot than competing campgrounds in the Granby area. The sites offer more tree cover and shade than many alternatives nearby. However, recent forest fires have significantly impacted the surrounding area, and some longtime visitors report that portions of the campground have been affected. Check current conditions before planning an overnight trip.

Wildlife viewing adds another dimension, with bald eagle nests spotted high in the timber near the reservoir. The area has also experienced toxic algae blooms in the past, so check water quality advisories before swimming or letting dogs in the water. Willow Creek Reservoir is best visited during summer and early fall, and it rewards visitors who prefer a peaceful, no-frills mountain lake over the busier developed reservoirs in Grand County.

Beautiful views, but we were looking for more variety for our birding efforts. Also the reservoir had toxic algae at the time we were there and had recently experienced fires in the area.

Our favorite place for many years to camp with family and fish but now destroyed by last year's forest fires. So sad, will be years before we can camp there again.
