About Red Dirt Reservoir

Red Dirt Reservoir sits tucked away in Grand County, Colorado, offering a no-frills camping and fishing experience that families have been returning to for decades. With no fees, no cell service, and no crowds on a good day, this is the kind of place where you set up camp by the water, build a fire from gathered logs and sticks, and spend the weekend pulling fish out of a quiet mountain lake surrounded by spectacular views.

Fishing at Red Dirt Reservoir is consistently productive, with visitors regularly catching five to ten or more fish per outing. The reservoir supports non-motorized boating, so expect a peaceful experience on the water without the noise of engines. Anglers who bring a boat can access deeper sections, though shore fishing also delivers solid results.

Camping at Red Dirt Reservoir is entirely free dispersed camping with no hookups, no reservations, and no formal amenities beyond a vault toilet near the water. Campsites are limited and fill up on busy weekends, so arriving early is a smart move. The setting is rustic by design, with no potable water, no trash service, and no restrooms beyond the vault toilet. Visitors should pack out everything they bring in, as litter left behind by careless campers is an ongoing problem at this otherwise pristine location.

The reservoir sits at high elevation in a remote area of Grand County with zero cellular reception. Plan accordingly and bring maps, supplies, and everything you need for a self-sufficient stay. Water levels can fluctuate significantly, and during dry periods the shoreline may recede, leaving muddy banks extending ten feet or more from the water's edge. This can limit access for fishing and launching small watercraft.

Wildlife is present throughout the area, including bears and free-ranging cattle. Store food properly and be aware of your surroundings. The landscape around Red Dirt Reservoir provides plenty of space to explore on foot, with open terrain and forested areas ideal for short hikes and nature walks. For families seeking an unplugged outdoor experience with reliable fishing and free camping under big Colorado skies, Red Dirt Reservoir delivers year after year.

First time here, and I loved every minute. Nice and quiet until another camper decided they wanted everyone to hear their music. Please stop being inconsiderate. Other than that--beautiful place
