About Brush Hollow Reservoir

Brush Hollow Reservoir sits in the high desert foothills of Fremont County, about 10 miles northwest of Penrose and a short drive from Florence and Canon City. This 300-acre reservoir serves as the local water supply, which means no swimming is allowed, but it draws a loyal following of anglers, kayakers, and anyone looking for a quiet day on the water in southern Colorado's Arkansas River Valley.

Fishing is the main draw at Brush Hollow Reservoir. The warm water supports healthy populations of largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill, and channel catfish, with stocked rainbow trout adding variety. Night fishing for catfish is especially popular during summer months. Shore fishing is possible but challenging because thick aquatic vegetation extends several feet from the banks in many spots. Anglers with a kayak, canoe, or small boat will have a significant advantage reaching open water. Be aware that Colorado Parks and Wildlife enforces a strict rule here: you must have a valid fishing license and gear in your possession, or you may be asked to leave and could receive a citation.

This is a wakeless reservoir, so motorized boats are allowed only at idle speed. That makes it an excellent destination for kayaking, canoeing, and paddleboarding in calm conditions. A boat ramp is available on the east side, though low water levels can make it unusable during drought years. Water levels fluctuate dramatically from season to season, and the reservoir has been drawn down to near-mudflat conditions in dry years, so check current conditions before making the trip.

The east side of Brush Hollow offers easier public access with a boat ramp, vault toilets, and picnic tables. The west side is more remote with rougher roads but provides more private fishing spots. Roads throughout the area can be rough with washouts and potholes, so a vehicle with decent clearance is recommended, especially on the west side. The area gets extremely hot in summer, so bring plenty of sunscreen and water. Wind can also pick up quickly and make fishing difficult.

Wildlife viewing is a bonus at Brush Hollow. Visitors have spotted bald eagles, wild mustangs on the west side, coyotes, and a variety of waterfowl. A dirt trail follows portions of the shoreline, offering walking and hiking opportunities with views of the surrounding desert hills. Nearby ATV and off-road trails add to the recreation options in the area.

One important health warning: mercury levels in the fish at Brush Hollow Reservoir are elevated. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has issued an advisory, and many locals recommend catch and release only. Check current fish consumption advisories before keeping any catch. Dogs are welcome but must remain on leash at all times.

Beautiful day at the lake.

The east side is more public with easier access to the water. The west side has more private spots and no boat launches. We saw Mustangs on this side.

Great place for still water kayaking. You are required to have a fishing license and gear, or Parks and Wildlife will ask you to leave, and you can get a ticket. This isn't well posted. Most people still don't even know about the requirement. I love that it is wakeless. It's quiet and peaceful. Most people are very friendly and respectful. Great wildlife, mostly fish and fowl. It's twice the size of San Isabel and half as busy. Hidden gem!

A beautiful lake ruined by sketchy characters. Went out to do some night fishing until dawn. Got to the lake at 12 am. People were playing loud dubstep that you could hear from across the lake, and possibly doing some drugs by all their screaming and yelling. I got to the opposite shore by hiking and started to fish. About 10 minutes in I saw a fisherman on the opposite shore get chased into his vehicle by coyotes. I decided to head back to my vehicle because the noisy pack was coming my way. The partiers were getting so loud and obnoxious that I felt very unsafe, so I snuck past their party to my car and quickly sped off.

I love coming down here for the warmer weather. Great fishing. I was here the other day and caught and released a few in a couple of hours!

We felt truly blessed to have spent our 11-year anniversary at Brush Hollow Winery. Christina and James are the epitome of gracious hospitality. The room views are a constant reminder of nature's majestic beauty, with mountains visible from every angle. We felt uplifted savoring the Pueblo Chili 🌶️ wine and Mediterranean wood-fired pizza. The fire 🔥 in the back garden at sunset was a sublime, unforgettable experience. We adore this enchanting place!

Good place for fishing and four wheeling. This year they actually filled the lake up for once and it was beautiful and had plenty of spots in the trees with privacy and shade But as usual it gets drained every year really low and then the mud is sludge that anyone could get stuck in and it's hard to get close to the water for fishing. Although when it was full this year it was beautiful.
