About Bluff Lake

Bluff Lake Nature Center is a 123-acre urban wildlife refuge in northeast Denver, tucked between the Stapleton and Park Hill neighborhoods at the edge of the Sand Creek Regional Greenway. The lake at its heart is ringed by cattails, cottonwoods, and native prairie grasses, and the bluff above it offers sweeping views of both the downtown skyline and the Front Range. For a city that keeps growing, Bluff Lake is a rare pocket of undeveloped habitat where bald eagles, great horned owls, and white pelicans show up on the same bird list as house finches and red-tailed hawks. If you live in Denver and want genuine nature without a mountain drive, this is one of the best spots in the metro area.

Established in 1994 as a nonprofit nature center, Bluff Lake is free and open to the public 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset. Two main trails loop through the property: the Lake Loop covers about one mile and circles the water, while the shorter Creek Loop adds roughly 0.4 miles along Sand Creek. Both paths are unpaved gravel and mostly flat, making them accessible for strollers and visitors with limited mobility. A boardwalk extends over the lake and provides a close-up vantage point for watching waterfowl, turtles, and the resident beavers that occasionally surface near dusk.

Birding is the headline activity here. More than 230 species have been documented at Bluff Lake on eBird, a remarkable count for an urban site. Sora and Virginia rail hide in the cattails during migration, and bald eagles nest in the cottonwoods near the water. Volunteer-led bird walks run on the first Saturday of every month, year-round. Spring and fall migration windows are the most productive for species diversity, but winter brings its own rewards with overwintering raptors and waterfowl.

Bluff Lake enforces a few important rules to protect wildlife habitat. Dogs, bikes, horses, and motorized vehicles are not allowed. Sledding and tubing on the bluff are prohibited. These restrictions keep the refuge quiet enough for deer, foxes, and coyotes to maintain territory within city limits. The nature center also runs free public programs including guided hikes, educational events for children, and seasonal habitat restoration days.

The center is located at 11255 East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, with a parking lot at the main entrance. No entrance fee is charged. Visitors should note that the gate locks at sunset, and vehicles left inside after closing may be locked in overnight. Wear sunscreen and a hat in summer, as shade is limited along parts of the Lake Loop. For families, runners, birders, and anyone seeking a calm escape from urban Denver, Bluff Lake Nature Center is one of the city's most valuable open spaces.

Beautiful little lake surrounded by cattails, with trails that encircle the lake. Lots of birds, including eagles. An enjoyable place to spend an afternoon.

Enjoyed the beavers peaking out and I tried to fish but a little bit too much algae… My dog loved the walk and the free leash.

Great place to walk around and admire while you wait for the Aurora city inspector to call your inspection.

This is a pretty good nature center. There is a lake with multiple trails that you can walk on. It is a frequent place for birders to bring their binoculars and bird watch. Some of the trails have good shade and others do not. So if you’re going in the summer make sure to bring a hat and sunscreen. I do wish there was a little more to see here and more of a center, like if they had a visitor center building were you could learn a little bit more about the wild life. But overall a nice place to come for access to nature

An amazing oasis in Denver for a 1-mile hike around a lake and over a bluff with views of the city and the mountains. No dogs or bikes allowed, so we've seen deer, owls, eagles and pelicans! Perfect for kids, runners, birders, pandemic escapes!
