About Platoro Reservoir

Platoro Reservoir is a remote, high-elevation impoundment in Conejos County that consistently earns praise as one of the most beautiful lakes in Colorado. Tucked deep in the southern San Juan Mountains along the Conejos River, this reservoir rewards visitors who make the drive with stunning mountain scenery, excellent trout fishing, and a sense of solitude that is hard to find at more accessible Colorado lakes. The 4.8-star rating reflects a place that genuinely impresses everyone who reaches it.

Trout fishing is the primary draw at Platoro Reservoir. Anglers report catching impressive numbers of trout, with some visitors describing their outings as some of the best fishing they have experienced in Colorado. The reservoir holds a healthy trout population, and both shore fishing and small boat fishing are productive. Water levels fluctuate throughout the season, and when levels drop, bank fishing spots become harder to find. Planning around water conditions and arriving prepared to explore different sections of the shoreline will improve your chances.

The scenery surrounding Platoro Reservoir is striking from every angle. The reservoir sits in a valley framed by rugged peaks, dense conifer forests, and alpine meadows. Visitors describe the views as picturesque year-round, though early fall when aspens change and late summer when wildflowers bloom are especially rewarding. The area is also popular with elk hunters in the fall, making it a multi-season destination for outdoor recreation.

Platoro Reservoir is best visited on weekdays when crowds thin out considerably. Weekend visits can bring more traffic, though the reservoir never feels as congested as front-range lakes. The drive in from the south is straightforward, but roads above the reservoir to the north can become impassable, especially after rain or early-season snow. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for exploring side roads in the area, and visitors should check road conditions before attempting to connect through to other destinations.

Nearby amenities are limited, fitting the remote character of the area. The small community of Platoro offers basic services, and the Rainbow Trout Ranch is a well-known lodging option nearby. Camping is available in the surrounding Rio Grande National Forest. Visitors should bring supplies, as this is a self-sufficient destination where the nearest full-service towns are Antonito to the south and South Fork to the north. Platoro Reservoir is best accessed from late May through October, depending on snowpack and road conditions.

One of the most beautiful lakes in Colorado. Didn't fish this time around as we were elk hunting.

Water level is very low, and fishing spots are hard to come by. The fishing was excellent though.

My husband and I discovered this place when we were out roaming around during our stay at the Rainbow Trout Ranch. We caught so many trout! There are beautiful views all around. Wish we had stayed longer but we had a nice outing.

We visited this picturesque place a couple days ago. Coming in from the south was fine but only a few curves above the reservoir the roads became impassible. So much for seeing Jasper this trip!
