About Blue Lake Reservoir

Blue Lake Reservoir lies in the open prairie of Bent County in southeastern Colorado, roughly 15 miles north of Las Animas along the Arkansas River corridor. When water levels cooperate, this plains reservoir offers a peaceful setting for fishing, swimming, and simply enjoying the quiet solitude of eastern Colorado's wide-open landscape.

Fishing is the main attraction at Blue Lake Reservoir. The warm-water fishery supports catfish and crappie, with catfish being the species most frequently targeted by local anglers. Bank fishing is the standard approach, though boating is possible when the reservoir holds sufficient water. The calm, warm water creates comfortable conditions for wading and casting from shore during summer months.

Water levels at Blue Lake Reservoir are highly variable, and this is the single most important factor to consider before visiting. The reservoir depends on seasonal precipitation and irrigation cycles, and during drought periods, it can dry up entirely. Multiple visitors have arrived to find no water at all, which eliminates fishing, boating, and any water-based recreation. Always check current conditions with local sources before making the drive, particularly during late summer and fall when levels tend to be lowest.

When water is present but lower than full pool, the receding shoreline exposes a wide sandy beach area that gives the lake a surprisingly appealing look. The water itself takes on a vivid blue color that stands out against the brown and tan hues of the surrounding prairie. Swimming is possible in the warm water, though there are no designated swimming areas or lifeguards on duty.

Access can be challenging for passenger vehicles. The roads leading to the shoreline may require a truck or SUV, especially when approaching across softer ground near the water's edge. Four-wheel drive is recommended if you plan to get close to the waterline.

Facilities at Blue Lake Reservoir are minimal. There are no restrooms, developed campgrounds, or drinking water on-site. Visitors should bring all supplies, including water, food, shade structures, and sun protection. The nearest services are available in Las Animas. Despite the remote feel, the reservoir rewards those who make the effort with genuine solitude and uncrowded shorelines on the Colorado plains.

Really pretty with a lot of beach when the water is lower. Water is warm, but it can be difficult to get close to the water if you don't have a truck or SUV.
